One Dress. Two Looks.

Are you budget conscious yet wish to blow out on two frocks and can’t decide between a long or short wedding dress? The answer to your problems is simple. The 2-in-1 convertible dress. Walk down the aisle in a romantic and flowy gown then when it’s time for your first dance, all you need to do is remove the skirt to transform your look into a sexy short dress. You’ve just saved yourselves some moola by buying only one dress, protected the environment by not wasting (you’re only going to wear the dresses once) and gave yourself more time to enjoy the celebrations by not hiding in the changing room. Now show off those perfect pins and rock that party of yours!

Fun in the Sun: Mint Green + Yellow Wedding.

As summer is fast approaching (or judging from this oppressive heat and humidity, it has arrived already), I wanted to share with you one of my favourite colour palette that’s ideal for a wedding on a gorgeous summer’s day. The light and airiness of mint green (sometimes known as seafoam) combined with splashes of sunny yellow will make any wedding fresh and cheerful. Although pale palettes can err on the side of a kid’s party, this combo yells fun. Give it a try.

p.s. I’ve just had my nails painted in mint green. Love.

Chinese Wedding: Colours to Avoid.

The Chinese are a superstitious lot. Tell them a particular date or year is auspicious and they’ll flock to the registry office to get hitched. Tell them they’ve got a lucky face and they might just believe you. Likewise, when it comes to choosing a colour for the wedding day, the Chinese are selective. Although most of you readers are non-conformists, it’s good to know which colours to avoid and are considered unfavourable. After all, you don’t want it to ruin the relationship with your parents nor spoil the fun.

Unlucky colours:
Black – it’s known as a funeral colour worldwide. The Chinese see it as a symbol of misfortunes and sadness.
White – use it sparingly. In the Western world, the colour symbolises purity and is considered the same in Chinese culture yet also associated with funerals. However, wearing a white dress is fine in the modern age, just lay low on the invitations and decor as the older generation are still against the concept of a wholly white wedding. You’d want splashes of colour anyways wouldn’t you?
Dark blue – who would’ve guessed? The traditional Chinese custom has it that when a family member passes away, you wear blue to mark the mourning.

Having said that, the decision is yours. Unless you really believe in it, don’t let traditions get in the way.

Do You Want to Be a Bebe Bride?

There’s yet another US retailer that’s jumped onto the bridal bandwagon and this time it’s Bebe, the brand synonymous with clubbing outfits. That means short, tight-fitting dresses that bares a little more skin than your average parent might allow. However, their new bridal line in collaboration with Project Runway’s Rami Kashou, has been designed to a certain extent, with the sophisticated bride in mind. If you want to feel like a princess for the day, you can even buy the Duchess of Cambridge’s Alexandra McQueen lookalike wedding gown, albeit with more cleavage on show. There’s also something for the bridesmaids that’ll flaunt their figure. Bebe ships internationally so if you’re pressed for time and like to be a bit risque, you’d better start shopping.

p.s. Topshop (go Brits!) will be launching their debut bridal collection in June, with Richard Nicoll as the designer and is apparently based on a ”modern alternative to meringue culture”. Feeling giddy!

Proposal Idea: Paint the Steps.

If you happen to live in a house (rare in this tiny city) and you own it, paint your love vows on the stairs and let her read what you’ve got in store for her. Her legs might just get a little wobbly.

Destination wedding. Just the thought of it sounds exotic enough. No matter where you’re planning to celebrate your nuptials, be it overlooking the vineyards in Tuscany or against the backdrop of the Adriatic sea (oh how dreamy), there’s going to be some element of stress even if you’re the world’s most-relaxed person. You’re thousands of miles away, you’ve probably never travelled there before and there could be language barrier. It’s your once-in-a-lifetime so you’re going to want it to be perfect. I don’t blame you. Here’s the first of many tips to get you started.

1. Unless the destination holds a special meaning to you as a couple (where you met, got engaged or where you’re from), ditch the idea of having it in an inaccessible location. Think of your guests. If it involves more than two transfers, it’s a no go. You want your friends and family to witness your happy moments and for them to enjoy themselves too, not moan about how difficult it was to get to your wedding. It’ll also reduce the chances of unexpected interruptions ruining the event, such as flight delays due to a volcanic eruption. Trust me, there’s nothing you can do about it when that does happen. It happened to me last year and all I could do was cry until I knew each and every single family member and friend had arrived. You don’t want a swollen eye on your big day.

2. Choose a destination that uses English as their first language or it’s widely used. You need to communicate with vendors and suppliers. If you don’t even speak the same language, how are you going to negotiate and tell them what you want? That’s where the wedding planner can prove to be useful, if you do decide to hire one.

3. Remember to check the weather. Avoid the rainy season unless you’re fine with getting drenched.

4. Before you decide on the destination, research around to see the availability of certain suppliers. Is it easy to source flowers? If you need caters, are they readily available?

5. Once you’ve decided on the destination, look at places that are all-inclusive and compare with those that simply hire out the venue. If you want to eliminate the need to source various suppliers, an all-inclusive package is the way to go. Most of these venues will have had experience with weddings  so they’ll ensure (or at least try to!) that your day will run without a hitch.

Wedding Food

King of Popsicles.

How do we know summer is here? There’s not a day we can step outside without a few drops of sweat and all you can think about is that ice-cold beverage. Same goes if you’re having an outdoor wedding, your guests will no doubt want to cool off. Treat them to a fruity (and alcoholic) popsicle or two and they’ll be forever grateful for your refreshing idea. The kids will love it too. Just make sure you have a bucketload of ice to stop the popsicles from melting.
