Wedding Cake

Wedding cake with a twist

We’ve all had sweet wedding cakes before and in the last few years, more and more cupcake wedding towers but how about something a little different, a little unconventional yet equally tasty? Many have done the cheese wheel cake, so what’s next? Here comes the pork pies. A meaty affair with lots of substance, it’ll definitely surprise your guests and save you some money too. Wedding cake served as a starter – who’d have thought?

Royal Wedding Wedding Venues

Wed like a Royal

With less than two weeks till the event of the decade, many girls will be dreaming and wondering what it’d be like to get married to a Prince. How about exchanging vows in a country of your own and to your own Prince Charming? When we think of overseas wedding destinations, it’s usually Phuket or Bali for the sun and beach, Tuscany or Provence for country-side and vineyards and Vegas if you’re looking for a ‘quickie’. If budget is not an issue, why not rent a country for the event of a lifetime? Now, you can rent the country of Leichenstein via Airbnb, the online company that brings you unique accommodation rentals (treehouse anyone?).

Airbnb is partnered with Rent a Village by Xnet, the Leichenstein-based events company that can transform the entire country to customise it to your liking and can even print your own currencies or rename the streets. The vineyards, the townhall, the museum to name just a few, will be all yours. The only catch is it costs from USD70k up per night (approximately HKD550k, and to put it into perspective for you, this is usually the minimum charge to have your wedding at a 5-star hotel in Hong Kong) and you’ll need to transport all your guests over to this double-landlocked country. Oh, and let’s not forget you’ll still have to share the country with 33,000 inhabitants.

Who said being a Royal was easy and cheap? It’s definitely going to get everyone in town talking.

We’ve got yet another American deal for you brides out there. Gilt, the members-only sample sale website for luxury items has launched The Wedding Shop until 21st April noon, Hong Kong time. That means, you (yes, lucky you) can buy a Reem Acra gown for USD1,999 (approximately HKD14,800), more than 60% off the retail price and this is not a budget line. There’s also something for the maids too: they’ll look oh so pretty in Twobirds dresses paired with Miguel Ases earrings. If you’re looking for inspiration, they’ve even got ideas for that country or city wedding of yours and survival kits for your big day. Once again, this is only available in the U.S. (why, oh why, are there so many fantabulous deals in the U.S. of A and nothing in Hong Kong?) and you’ll need an invitation to become a member. Send Bridelicious a message with your name and e-mail and she’ll decide whether you’re worthy of an invitation.

Act fast. You only have 3 days left.

Beauty Bridesmaids Groom Honeymoon Wedding Fashion

All-in-one Wedding Shop

After hours sat in front of my Mac researching bridesmaids dresses in a desperate attempt to find ready-made dresses online, Bridelicious discovered that the American department store, Nordstrom now ships overseas, including Hong Kong. They have a whole department filled with all things wedding related and there’s even something for the groom, flower girls, mums, ring-bearer and gift ideas for the bridal party. Wedding dresses are also reasonably priced so it’s not going to cost you a bomb and you’ll have money left to buy yourself pretty honeymoon outfits. Happy shopping!

Wedding songs

Ceremony Processional

Having a headache trying to figure out what songs to play at your wedding ceremony and even if you’ve found the music, how long should each song be played for? It varies between venues as a longer aisle will obviously require a longer song. If you’ve hired a string quartet or a harpist, consult them as they know best. It’s their profession. However, if like me, you’re stuck, this article on song length may just be your savior.

Hong Kong Dress Makers

Dear Hong Kong Dress Makers,

Thank you for making my weekend a disaster. Luckily, I have helpful and supportive bridesmaids to get me through this difficult time, otherwise they’ll have nothing to wear except for their shoes. How can you make such a mess out of what is technically, a very simple dress? One needn’t be a professional tailor to figure out what’s wrong. How can you possibly lie with your eyes opened that there’s 80% similarity between the tailored dress and the photo I’ve so kindly provided you? How can you blame the bride for not giving strict instructions – doesn’t the photo speak for itself? Have you not learnt the business etiquette to always put customers first and most importantly, do not ever argue with the bride? Just because other brides want a certain style, doesn’t mean I want it. If you need a quick summary of what not to do, here it is:

  1. Don’t place thick padding in the bust area. Contrary to your belief and certain local bridesmaids’ beliefs, this does not provide perspective. If you have small assets, embrace it.
  2. Don’t change the style of the dress just because you think it’s better. Consult the bride first.
  3. Don’t leave a gap between the chiffon and satin material underneath. It’s not nice and makes it look cheap.
  4. Don’t try to charge more to remake the dress when you hadn’t delivered the product in the first place. It’s your fault.
  5. Don’t take the order in the first place if you knew you couldn’t even deliver 80% of what the bride asked for. It’s better to be honest and have one less customer than potentially lose lots in the long run. Told you not to mess with the bride.
  6. Don’t just make long dresses. Practice more with short dresses – more and more brides want a fun, flirty and summery style. Weddings don’t always have to be that formal.
  7. Don’t make up excuses for delaying the dress delivery date. One doesn’t have to be that smart to deduce that you’re lying. How can it take 3 months to make an awful dress?

I hope you learn from your mistakes. Not all brides are that forgiving.

Regards,

Bridelicious

Not all dress makers are of this quality but unless you’re filthy rich, you’re not going to spend HKD2k on each bridesmaid dress.

Bride in crisis

What do you do when it’s 7 weeks before your wedding and you find out your tailor has done an utterly bad job with your bridesmaid dresses. Break down, become a bridezilla, find another tailor or buy off the rack? Bridelicious is currently in crisis mode and needs a plan B: buy off the rack or change the entire colour theme.

If this ever happens to you (hopefully not), just breathe and manifest. It’ll all turn out fine.

Dealing with suppliers

I’ve learnt my lesson. NEVER tell suppliers the true date of your wedding unless you need them to deliver on the actual day itself. Otherwise, make it up. I’ve had issues with both dress tailors and shoe-makers for my bridesmaids. Both times their excuse for not delivering the finished item on time was that it wasn’t urgent as my wedding is in 2-months time. Are they taking the piss? Do they not understand that 1. customer is always first 2. if they tell me it’ll be ready at the end of March, that’s what I expect? Just because the practice in Hong Kong is to delay everything till the last minute doesn’t mean every bride wants that.

Fellow brides out there, sometimes lying can be the best way forward.

Calm before the…party

Are you one of those brides who cries easily, be it potentially at your own wedding or at others? Does the thought of your soon to be hubby declaring his undying love for you bring a tear to your eyes? Planning a wedding is stressful but often, we forget how nerve-wracking it can be on the actual day itself. You’ve spent months planning to ensure that everything goes smoothly so the last thing you want to happen is to freak out because the song you’re walking down the aisle to has decided at the last-minute it’ll prefer to be mute (what do you do?! Act gracious and keep walking). No one needs to know you’re a bridezilla. A glass of champagne or a shot of tequila may calm the nerves but if you’re not a drinker, taking a herbal remedy may help wave those anxiety bugs away. At least, you won’t be stinking of alcohol.

Bridelicious will be trying one of these remedies for her own big day so tune in to read about the results.

Vera Wang…I adore.

The Delaney. One of my favourite dresses. Photo from The Wedding Shop

I know this may not apply to those living in Hong Kong, but who knows, perhaps you happen to be in London this weekend? If you are, you’re one lucky gal. The wedding shop in Selfridges is having its closing down sale and they’re slashing the prices. You can get a Vera Wang dress for as low as £425 (that’s roughly HKD5,400 for you Hong Kong gals out there). It’s almost worth buying a plane ticket just to get your dream dress.
