Real Weddings: Cath & Kev (Whistler) Part II

Last month, you had a glimpse into Cath & Kev’s Whistler wedding which was filled with love, food and more love. Today, we’re going to talk details which have been so softly portrayed by up-and-coming wedding photographer, Jada Poon. By details, I mean the small touches that reflect who they are as a couple; one they can call their own. No pressure from family and together with Bliss Event, they created a vision of a wedding surrounded by nature and set in a casual, relaxed atmosphere, especially because they both love the outdoors. It all started with their invitations; a pop-up card with an image of Cedarstone, the private home where they exchanged vows and let’s not forget, the grizzly bear (According to the Estate Manager, there were sightings of them a couple of days before the big day. Not sure how well it would’ve gone down if they turned up as one of the wedding guests.). A website was also built to let guests in on updates and information about their nuptials.

As a token of thanks and appreciation for those closest to her, Cath had the bridal party names (including the Mums) embroidered onto bathrobes by DIY Embroidery Shop in Hong Kong. If you’re also thinking of getting some embroidery work done, you may need to enlist the help of a Chinese speaking friend to help you communicating with the shop staff.

Having grown up listening to classical music and being a concert pianist himself, it was important to Kev that there was a string quartet. It was truly, music in the woods.

Letting guests help themselves to refreshments created a less stuffy atmosphere. And just like how ‘love is sweet’, Cath & Kev are ‘sweet like love’.

Birdcages were hung on trees, giving off a romantic and rustic vibe whilst fresh garden flowers were predominantly used to be in line with nature. As a scrapbook fan, Cath wanted guests to write messages and pieces of advice to them in a way that she would read over and over again.

Since British Colombia is the largest Canadian producer of highbush blueberries (thanks Wiki!), it only made sense to make use of the natural produce. Bowls of blueberries were scattered over the long wooden tables for guests to nibble on, juicy fruit pies were served and fresh fruit adorned the square wedding cake.

Everyone wore custom aprons (which coupled as favours) that were thoughtfully prepared by the couple so they wouldn’t get themselves in a mess pigging out on the family-style dinner. The aprons were printed at Ka Chun Professional Printing Workshop in Hong Kong.

DIY Wedding Cupcakes Tutorial (Part 1)

In this three part post, I’m sure you’ll be drooling from one photo to another. One sunny afternoon, I, together with Carrie from and Jada from Jada Photography spent a few hours learning the tricks of the trade to transform any cupcake into an edible delight. Perfect for a bridal shower, as a wedding cake alternative or as a wedding favour, you’re going to give yourself a pat on the back after your own cupcakes session. Here’s the start to your cupcake feast.

Vanilla Cupcake Recipe by

Cupcake Ingredients:
1 stick unsalted butter, room temperature
1/2 cup granulated white sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
3/4  teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teapsoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (60 ml) milk

Confectioners (Buttercream)Frosting Ingredients:
2 cups (230 grams) confectioners sugar (icing or powdered sugar), sifted
1 stick unsalted butter room temperature
2 tablespoons milk or light cream
Assorted food colors(if desired)

How to make the Cupcakes:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (177 degrees C) and line 12 muffin cups with paper liners.
In the bowl of your electric mixer, or with a hand mixer, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the vanilla extract.
In a separate bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
With the mixer on low speed, alternately add the flour mixture and milk, in three additions, beginning and ending with the flour. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
Evenly fill the muffin cups with the batter and bake for about 17 -20 minutes or just until set and a toothpick inserted into a cupcake comes out clean. (Always check a few minutes before the stated baking time. Do not over bake or the cupcakes will be dry.)
Remove from oven and place on a wire rack to cool.
Once the cupcakes have completely cooled, frost with icing.

How to make the Confectioners (Buttercream) Frosting:
In an electric mixer, or with a hand mixer, cream the butter until smooth and well blended.
With the mixer on low speed, gradually beat in the sugar. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
Add the milk and beat on high speed until frosting is light and fluffy (about 3-4 minutes). Add a little more milk or sugar, if needed.
Tint the frosting with desired food color (if desired).

Peaceful Romance: Jada Poon Photography

Romance is a funny thing. It makes your heart flutter, it makes you cry with tears of joys, it brings out the child in all of us and it makes you want to spend the rest of your life with that special someone. You’re young, you’re in love and you’re about to make a life-long commitment. What better way is there to express all these emotions than having them captured in a pre-wedding shoot, especially in the hands of a talented photographer?

Jada of Jada Poon Photography is an ex-lawyer passionate about fine arts who quit her high-flying job to pursue a career in capturing people’s happiest moments. In her own words, she wants to ‘keep it simple’ by encouraging couples to dress casual during their engagement shoot sessions and to allow them to act normally. A photo of two lovebirds laughing really does speak a thousand words, if done right. You can tell that Jada puts her heart into it; from her DIY props to capturing a couple’s most natural smile using soft light and even extending to the small details she places in her CD packaging. She takes inspiration from her two favourite wedding photographers, Jose Villa and Elizabeth Messina, whose workshops she has and will be attending respectively, and brings an artistic touch to all her photos.

I’m glad Jada has entered the world of weddings. Go on, give her a ring and say cheese :)
