Have Yourself a Very Merry Wedding.

We’ve seen lots of candy bars at weddings lately not least because we all have a sweet tooth (to a certain degree). Since it’s the winter season and Christmas is coming up in 7 days, how about changing it up by having a festive bar serving mulled wine, apple cinnamon cider and hot chocolate (with custom toppings and liquors) to keep the guests warm and merry? Your big day just got a whole lot better.

1. Set up a station/bar area (1-2 medium length rectangular tables) for where the drinks will be served during cocktail hour.
2. Prepare the drinks in advance and keep them in pots or warmers for self-service or if your venue accommodates, get one of their staff to be the bar man/lady.
3. Print out the signage for the respective winter drinks. Not only do they tell your guests what’s bubbling in the pots, they also make for great photo ops.

Mulled Wine Recipe by Jamie Oliver. If you’re short on time, buy ready-made mulled wine spice sachets from City’super or Great and infuse it in your favourite red wine. Use cinnamon sticks as stirrers.

Apple Cinnamon Cider Recipe on All Recipes. If you want to wow your guests, cut and hollow out apples for serving the warm cinnamon cider in your fruity cups.

Hot Chocolate Recipes by Martha Stewart. Allow your guests to customise their own hot cuppa by providing some extras such as marshmallows, whipped cream, flavoured syrup, candy cane stirrers and dark chocolate shavings. The kids will love it! And for the adults, let them add in a few dashes of rum for that extra warmth.

It can double up as an escort or place card and if you’re using them as Christmas present tags, you can be sure your gift will be opened by the right person. Just use a hole puncher to punch a single hole at the top end of the tag and tie a string or ribbon of your choice to make it your own. Happy Friday!

Beach Wedding: Recycling Oyster Shells.

Over the weekend, I indulged myself in an oyster feast which was freshly flown and hand-brought from Sydney’s Fish Market to Hong Kong. Usually we shuck them, eat them and then chuck them but seeing dozens of oyster shells being put to waste made me think that there must be ways to recycle them for use, especially for a beach wedding. If you do go down this recycling route, make sure the shells are thoroughly scrubbed and boiled for a few minutes before using them in your DIY project. Give them a new life by dusting them lightly with your favourite coloured paint and transform them into place cards or wrap a few around a candle for an instant beach look. Whatever you choose, know that you’ve just saved your wallet and helped contribute to a greener world.

Photo Backdrop: DIY Fabric Wall Art.

You’ve seen some funky and wacky photo backdrops before and you know being Hong Kong, creating a unique never-been-seen backdrop can cost you a fair bit. To save your wallet and the environment (to an extent), turn old shoe box lids into beautiful pieces of art. Yes, you too can be a so-called artist. Find some nice wrapping paper or fabric and wrap the lids to create a mis-matched wall of pop art, without even having to purchase frames. It’ll make for a much more interesting backdrop and will give it a more 3-dimensional look. You can even draw your own words or letters on paper to wrap around it. Start asking friends and family for their unused shoeboxes. They may look at you funny but just wait till they see your crafty work.

Free Printable: Sketch Thank You Cards.

Is it the start of October already? The wedding peak season has officially started (well, for us in Hong Kong anyways) and I know that many of you brides and grooms will have your hands tied. Remember not to become a bridezilla or groomzilla and never forget to thank those who have helped you along the way, as well as the guests for attending your big bash. A simple ‘thank you’ can mean a lot but why not take it up a notch by sending a handwritten thank you card. Putting in the effort and time shows your sincerity and will make you stand out from the crowd. Now, get cracking with these free printables (and as with all the other printables you find on this site, give me a shout if you’d like them in another colour).

DIY: Paper Bag Menus

Oh the good ol’ brown paper bags. Memories of school tuck-shops and synonymous with Hong Kong street food (the egg waffles, fishballs), these paper bags make for a rustic addition to your big day. You can use them as thank you favour bags for a candy bar, a 2-in-1 menu and gift bag or fill them up with flowers for your ceremony exit. The choice is yours.

DIY PAPER BAG TUTORIAL

Materials:
Brown Paper Bags – Wah Kiu Plastic Bags, G/F, 222 Yu Chau Street, Sham Shui Po, Kowloon, Hong Kong
Tape
Inkjet Printer + Ink

Tip:  Use dark colours for your design and as much as you’d like your letters to be in white, there’s no such thing as white printer ink.

Tape along the frayed edges to prevent the bag from jamming in your printer. This is not 100% foolproof but will cut down the chances of it occurring.

Input the paper bag measurements into your printer settings.  Click print and hope that your paper bag won’t jam.

Ta da. Your first DIY brown paper bag with your own design. For this example, the dinner menu was printed on the paper bags which doubled up as a wedding favour – the favour being their favourite Cheesies chips from Canada.

DIY Projects Guests

Love Potion Wedding Favours.

As far as wedding favours go, nothing can beat a shot of alcohol to make your guests loosen up, get into the groove and enjoy themselves. Line them up on the reception table with guests’ name tags to serve as escort cards or at the table as place cards. No matter what alcohol you decide to thank your guests with, be it rum, vodka, tequila, champagne or even your own concoction; you’ll be sure the party will start and end on a high. To personalise the bottles, I’ve put together a simple ‘Let’s get the party started’ label design in various colours for you to DIY. Simply print directly on label paper to create a sticker or if you prefer, print on thick paper, poke a hole and tie a string around the bottle for a tag style. Now, drink up!
