Peplum Comeback.

Originated in the mid-19th Century, the peplum has evolved from a mere extra overskirt that dropped from the waist to one that’s fitted to a jacket or dress. It’s a godsend to women with its nipped in waist, creating an illusion of an hourglass figure whilst maintaining a flirty feel. Everyone’s wearing it; from the runway to the red carpet and even the Duchess of Cambridge has been spotted in this comeback style. The extra material off the waist will hide any junk in the trunk, so if you’re not one for dieting, the peplum may be your ticket to looking trim on your wedding day. Go on, strut your stuff.

Oh, Doily!

When we think of doilies, it usually conjures up memories of your grandmother’s house with doily mats under every inanimate object. Vase, check. Plate, check. T.V., check. It also serves as inspiration for the 70′s crochet hippy era and suffice to say, it’s making a comeback. No longer is it thought of as slightly old-fashioned but it’s been given a new lease of life. Use it as a placemat or for your cupcakes to create a girly touch or DIY wedding invitation envelopes to up the romance factor. Whatever it is that you use the doily for, you’ll be sure you’ve at least got your nan’s seal of approval.

Simply Bridal: Online Bridal Shop + Giveaway!

How many times have you looked at a wedding dress and had to stop and breathe because of the astronomical price and wondered when you’ll ever afford it? Reality check. After all, not all couples who get married are minted. In comes SimplyBridal, the bridal shop founded by Lawrence Ng, that takes the stress out of wedding budgeting by removing the middleman and selling their products online (with only one showroom in L.A.) and in turn, passing the savings on to you. Now, aren’t you lucky? With a biannual collection (spring and fall) designed by a Fashion Insitute of Technology graduate whose had over twelve years of experience in the fashion industry, including BCBGMAXAZRIA and Suzi Chin for Maggy Boutique, you can be assured that the gowns are fashion forward. What sets SimplyBridal apart from other online retailers is that their dresses are custom-made. That means, no matter what size you are, your dress will be made to fit you and on the off-chance it doesn’t (especially if you’ve become a gym freak within the 40-45 days order time frame), there’s a 30-day risk free return policy that’ll give you the peace of mind. Dresses are currently shipped to the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia and New Zealand and their expansion plans mean that they may well be shipping to you (if you don’t live in any of their current shipping zones) very soon, so keep an eye out. For now, you can get a glimpse of what they produce by entering the veil giveaway at the bottom of this post!

So, where do you start before placing your order? Shelly Adams, Relationship Manager for SimplyBridal advises brides to do a search on their site for dress shapes that they like before heading into a dress shop to try on gowns in the shape of interest. Enlist the help of your bridal party so they can give you honest opinions so that if you look ridiculous in a lace dress, they’ll be sure to let you know. Follow the guide on how to take your measurements on SimplyBridal and click away. Who would’ve thought buying a wedding dress could be as simple as a few steps? There’s even a collection for bridesmaids with a variety of colours and styles that’ll make your wedding planning relatively stress-free.

The Bow Tie Effect.

Ladies, I think you’ve had plenty of attention from me, the lads are getting jealous. So, to play fair, today’s post is about your man. Let’s face it, most men aren’t fashionable and would rather be wearing a pair of flip-flops, a t-shirt and shorts on their wedding day (if they had a say). Make him wear a tux and a bow tie and he’ll want to be the first one out. So, in order to make your man look dapper without the need to go for the full suit (only if he refuse profusely), give him a fun bow tie to wear, with a dress shirt of course. Gone are the days of grandpa-looking or big clown-like ones. It’s now about the polka dots, the checks and the stripes. Pair it with suspenders or a waistcoat for a quirky look or wear it with a suit for a more formal and classy feel. You can even get the groomsmen and the ring bearers to be in on this and you’ll have one uber dapper looking bridal party.

How to Tie a Bow Tie.
I think part of the reason men don’t wear bow ties more often is simply because they don’t actually know how to tie one. Show him you care by learning how to tie one. Tell him to wear a bow tie on your big day so all that effort won’t be put to waste. Check out the tutorial at Visual News.

To top it off, follow this DIY tutorial Green Wedding Shoes, and make the wedding bow tie for your man. His heart might just melt.

Bride Tradition Wedding Fashion

The Long and Short of Veils.

To veil or not to veil. That is the question that many brides have running through their wedding brain. Roman tradition has it that the veil, called the flammeum and was painted with fire designs, was worn to protect the bride from the evil spirits who might kidnap her before she’s even reached her husband. Then, you’ve got the other legend that has the bride covering her face with the veil as a symbol of purity, and because many marriages were arranged, having her face hidden meant the soon-to-be-husband can’t back out! Men, haven’t you heard of the saying, ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’?!

In these modern times, the veil is now worn more as a fashion statement rather than because of its traditional links. Many brides even forgo the veil altogether (why detract the attention from your stunning gown?) and opt for either a birdcage veil or simply go au naturale (on the face that is). As with many parts of the wedding, there is no right or wrong answer. Go with what makes you feel comfortable.

The popular veil lengths:

The cathedral veil.  The kind you see in photos that seem to miraculously float in the air, all the time. It’s the most formal, dramatic and oh-so-romantic style as it’s floor length and should only be worn over dresses that are unfussy, otherwise you run the risk of looking like a headless chicken.

The Fingertip. This veil falls around the fingertips, roughly between 36-45inches long and works especially well with dresses that have a simple bodice but a detailed skirt. Remember Kate Middleton’s Alexander McQueen gown with the lace rimmed veil?

The Birdcage. They’re everywhere and if you’re going for a 1920′s vintage look, you’ll want to wear it. The netting covers the face just enough so that everyone can still see your gorgeous face. Classy and sweet, it’s the modern day bride’s answer to perfect veil. I love this look!

Here Comes the Children.

Alright, I know some of you may not be big fans of children at weddings because you run the chance of them creating a scene especially during the most important parts of your day, such as the exchange of vows, but seeing that today is the International Children’s Day, I thought I’d help you overcome that fear. Trust me, I’m not exactly a child lover either, but when you’ve seen some of these oh-so-cute ring bearers and flower girls in their dapper and pretty outfits coupled with their adorable smiles, you may think twice about leaving them out. Happy Friday!

Fashionable Bridesmaids: The Skirts.

Your girlfriends. The ones who will be there through thick and thin so it’s your duty to make sure they’re looking stylish on your wedding day. That’s assuming they are your bridesmaids. Jump on the latest fashionable trend: the two-piece. Perfect for a casual summer or outdoor wedding, pair a simple white tank with a monochrome skirt and if you dare to go a bit wild, get the bridesmaids to wear a funky patterned number. They’ll thank you from the bottom of their hearts for not making them wear a hideous frock that they’ll never be able to wear again. This way, they’ve got an extra outfit in their wardrobe and you’re sure your money hasn’t gone to waste. Don’t worry, no matter how pretty or cool you make them, there’s still no chance of them upstaging you. All eyes will be on you, the beautiful bride. The bridesmaids are just a bonus.

One Dress. Two Looks.

Are you budget conscious yet wish to blow out on two frocks and can’t decide between a long or short wedding dress? The answer to your problems is simple. The 2-in-1 convertible dress. Walk down the aisle in a romantic and flowy gown then when it’s time for your first dance, all you need to do is remove the skirt to transform your look into a sexy short dress. You’ve just saved yourselves some moola by buying only one dress, protected the environment by not wasting (you’re only going to wear the dresses once) and gave yourself more time to enjoy the celebrations by not hiding in the changing room. Now show off those perfect pins and rock that party of yours!

Fun in the Sun: Mint Green + Yellow Wedding.

As summer is fast approaching (or judging from this oppressive heat and humidity, it has arrived already), I wanted to share with you one of my favourite colour palette that’s ideal for a wedding on a gorgeous summer’s day. The light and airiness of mint green (sometimes known as seafoam) combined with splashes of sunny yellow will make any wedding fresh and cheerful. Although pale palettes can err on the side of a kid’s party, this combo yells fun. Give it a try.

p.s. I’ve just had my nails painted in mint green. Love.
