Ring-a-licious.

Olympic day is finally here and I can’t wait to start cheering for Team GB and Team HK. In celebration of this, it’s only fitting to take inspiration from the Olympic symbol (the five rings) and have ourselves a mini ring party. Wedding ring shots no longer need to be stale and boring. Get your photographer to use the surroundings or any object to create a unique photo that you can keep forever. Got some lemons anyone?

Photo Checklist for Your Perfect Moments.

You trust your photographer but s/he isn’t Superman and can’t read your mind. To ensure they don’t miss out any of your most important moments or details, send them a checklist of what they must take to prevent any arguments post-wedding. Here’s the list.

Photoshop: From Ordinary to Fabulous.

Happy Weekend everyone! It’s an incredibly hazy and hot day, so what better way to spend it than to stay put at home to sort out your photo archive. Your friends and family may have forwarded their snaps of you on your big day and since they may not all be professional photographers, their photos may appear a tad stale. Fret not because we all know the powers of photoshop. Just add a little bit of light and colour here and there, and you can transform one ordinary looking photo into a slightly more artsy form. I came across this easy tutorial from Alex Beadon Photography who shows us in a step-by-step video how it’s all done. I’m going to try it for myself and so should you!

MerryMarry Me.

Many of us (myself included!) are inseparable from our smartphones and more often than not, we find ourselves using our phones to take photos more than our digital camera. When it comes to weddings, we all become snap happy and want to capture every special moment from the beautiful couple to the details and usually can’t wait to share it with our Facebook or Instagram friends. In comes the new app, MerryMarry that was developed when one of the engineers at a tech company in Palo Alto, San Francisco, was getting married and found it impossible to keep track of RSVPs as well as photos that were taken on the day. From when you first get engaged to after your big day, your wedding story can be shared with your guests via Facebook, for as long as you like. Send e-invites to your guests and let the app manage your RSVPs so you can sit back, relax and read the incoming congratulatory messages from your friends and family. After the celebrations are over, get your guests to upload their photos to your private album so you can re-live the day. Even if you’ve hired a professional photographer, you’ll find that they might have missed certain shots. After all, they’ve only got a pair of arms, a pair of legs and a pair of eyes. The app is currently only available on the iPhone but Amy Min, co-founder of the app advised that the Android version will be rolled out next month so those of you with Samsung phones needn’t wait too long. What’s even better is that it’s free so what are you waiting for?

It's A Score!

Now that the Euro 2012 is under way, how many times have you sat in a sports bar or restaurant with your man, trying to spend ‘quality’ time together, only to have him stare at the t.v. screen and not at your pretty face? Even if there’s no t.v., how many times does your man check his phone for the latest score? Men are not good at multi-tasking. It’s a fact. Sorry, if you’re a guy reading this. So, what if your big day coincides with a big sports game? For one, before you even begin to choose your wedding date, make sure or at least try to make sure there’s no major sporting event going on during that period because not only will your man be pre-occupied, but so will the guests. It’s not that they mean for their attention to be diverted from your wedding, but if they’ve been supporting a particular team or player for a long time, it’s hard for them to stop being a loyal fan. You can’t really blame them. Even if your big day happens to clash with the FA Cup final, don’t panic. Show that you care about the sport by incorporating football elements in the decor or serve food that reminds guests of attending a football match such as hot dogs with grilled onions that they can smell from a mile away. If you’re a good host, you can even set up a separate room with a t.v. screen for the guests to catch the game once in a while or a foosball table for cocktail hour entertainment. For an even sweeter gesture, sew a football charm to your garter and your hubby (by then!) will surely only have eyes for you.

Beyond the Aesthetics: Isa Photography

There are tonnes of photographers in town these days (they usually stick out like a sore thumb with their ginormous cameras or carrying their smartphones and snapping at everything they see) but it’s not often you get to come across a talented individual who manages to bring a photo to life. Isa of Isa Photography, another ex-professional who ditched the legal world (can you hear the cheers?) has done just that. Her fresh take on engagement shoots focuses on the couple’s genuine happiness and love story whilst giving off a playful vibe at the same time.

Before the couples go in front of the camera, Isa talks to them at length to get the know them and plan the photo session, from styling to clothes and props. Sometimes couples are shy (c’mon, not everyone dreams to be a celeb or model) and Isa’s trick “is just to make them feel like I’m not there and let them sit, chat and laugh”. The relaxed nature of Isa’s photos have been inspired by Jose Villa and Jonathan Canlas, two film photographers (not many do that nowadays!) who have, in Isa’s words “the ability to go beyond the aesthetics of a photo and really unwrap and present a relationship as it really is”. Bravo, because Isa has got it right. One of my favourites is her capture of young love, Michelle & Andy, whose affection for each other just shines from their eyes and their smiles. It goes to show that you don’t need a dramatic background in order to achieve beautiful photos. When you’re in love, nothing else in the world matters.

Peaceful Romance: Jada Poon Photography

Romance is a funny thing. It makes your heart flutter, it makes you cry with tears of joys, it brings out the child in all of us and it makes you want to spend the rest of your life with that special someone. You’re young, you’re in love and you’re about to make a life-long commitment. What better way is there to express all these emotions than having them captured in a pre-wedding shoot, especially in the hands of a talented photographer?

Jada of Jada Poon Photography is an ex-lawyer passionate about fine arts who quit her high-flying job to pursue a career in capturing people’s happiest moments. In her own words, she wants to ‘keep it simple’ by encouraging couples to dress casual during their engagement shoot sessions and to allow them to act normally. A photo of two lovebirds laughing really does speak a thousand words, if done right. You can tell that Jada puts her heart into it; from her DIY props to capturing a couple’s most natural smile using soft light and even extending to the small details she places in her CD packaging. She takes inspiration from her two favourite wedding photographers, Jose Villa and Elizabeth Messina, whose workshops she has and will be attending respectively, and brings an artistic touch to all her photos.

I’m glad Jada has entered the world of weddings. Go on, give her a ring and say cheese :)

Engagement Shoots: Natural is Best.

I’ve never been a big fan of engagement shoots/pre-wedding photos because in this city, photographers concentrate on overly styled photos that are more editorial than portraying a couple in love. You’ll often see girls traipsing round the streets of Central in a long rental wedding dress or evening gown with full-on make up, whilst her other half is sweating like a pig in his shimmery silver tux trying to please his princess. Oh pu-lease. Unless you want to get run over by a double-decker bus, why would you take a photo in the middle of a zebra-crossing? Not to mention that ordinary people don’t walk around wearing a white wedding dress except for on their wedding day.

Save yourself the stress of hiring outfits that you’re scared of damaging and the embarrassment of wondering around the busy crowds (no, when a stranger stops and stares, they’re not admiring you as a loved up couple, they’re thinking ‘you fools hahaha’) by going natural. It simply means wear casual clothes, go for minimal make up, act like how you normally do and smile like you mean it. The photos are meant to be a reflection of your love, your commitment, so go to places that hold a special meaning to you; be it a quiet street where you first held hands, your favourite cafe or the place you first laid eyes on each other. Tell your photographer what you want, the style you’re looking for and let them do the work to bring the photos to life. They may add props to show who you are, what you like; a tennis racquet for tennis aficionados, books for bookworms, tv controller for the movie buffs.

In the next week, I’ll be introducing two very talented up-and-coming photographers that all couples should keep a lookout for (as you know, natural isn’t exactly HK’s forte). Both ex-lawyers, both girls and both believe that ‘natural is best’.

Photo Booths: Crazy Props.

Now that you’ve got your photo booth, you can concentrate your thoughts on how to make the photos more amusing. You’ve got the usual moustaches, big bow-ties, oversized glasses and afro wigs, which can get a little…well, boring. The sky is the limit when it comes to props. Let guests write on chalkboard speech bubbles which can double up as guest books or if you have a theme, work with that. Go crazy. Top it up with a few drops of alcohol and you’ll be surprised how much they’ll let loose, even for the most stern. It’s all about shameless fun.

Where to buy?: Costume shops on Pottinger Street in Central for party-wear or Etsy for paper props.

DIY: If you’ve got time on your hands, here’s another DIY project for you. Oh Happy Day has a brilliant free printable download so you too, can make your own props. You’re becoming quite the crafty chick aren’t you?
